Force Connection

This blog post is going to be about about force connection, combining 2 or more objects together to create another new object.

There are a lot of innovators in this world, creating things that we use in out daily lives, to make our lives easier. An obvious object will be our mobile phones.

Mobile phones are created with many applications in it which includes calculator, mp3, video calling, camera..etc, which it's supposed to fulfil the basic function of calling and texting.

For our class, exercise, we have to think of 3 objects in everyday lives that have force connections.
One if things I thought of would be heelys, which I have it in my house.

There is a wheel underneath a shoe where the wheels can be taken out and the shoe can be worn as a normal walking shoes as well.

2nd example will be the radio clock in my room.

This radio clock not only shows us time, and plays songs on the radio, we can also set alarm so we won't be late for school or work.

Last example is my childhood favourite pen, bubble-chop ball point pen. On the top is a chop, the middle with bubbles and bottom, ball point pen.

From this exercise, I have to observe my surroundings really carefully and think very hard of the objects that have force connections that are not commonly see everywhere.

Analogical Thinking 2

Hello everyone! How's your day been so far? I hope it's fine. This post, I'll be blogging about what I've learnt in my lesson for analogical thinking- similes and metaphors.
http://www.playrific.com/images/media/vim1similes.jpg

Similes are a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. For example, 'Amanda is as graceful as a swan'. For this one, I'm implying that Amanda, is graceful like a swan using '...as...as' to compare both things because they have a similarity.

One more example to give you a clearer picture of what simile is. 'Ben is as busy as a bee'. Bees are one of the busiest living thing because they work non stop to retrieve more honey.

Metaphors are a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity.
In metaphors, we is '...is...'
An example will be 'Claudia is a shining star in our class.' This suggests that Claudia is very famous in our class, directly saying she is a shining star to emphasize and make it more impactful.

The whole class was tested on similes and metaphors as the teacher wanted to check on our understanding. I would say that similes and metaphors are indeed very important in this language and it can be used to improve our English.

Next, our teacher told us to find 2 objects that have a similarity and we have to give 3 examples. What I thought of was 'Bird and Aeroplane' This 2 things can fly in the sky, thus they are both quite the same.

Next will be 'light and Sun' Both of this gives off light energy so that we can see clearly.

Last example is 'Tree and House' this 2 have a similarity because both of them provides shelter, just that Tree provides shelter to insects and animals while house provides shelter to humans.

I have learned a lot from this lesson as it requires us to think hard, testing our creativity.

Analogical Thinking

In this lesson, we were asked to discover objects that shows emotions, not with the intention of purposely creating it. Below are some examples of buildings that have 'faces,' showing how they felt.

The above image shows a pair of chair close together. The chair on the left has a backrest and looks more comfortable compared to the right one. The moment I looked at this image, I can see the chair on the right feeling small and inferior, not as good as the left. The right might also be a chair to allow a person to rest its legs. The left chair will seem more useful to people in comparison.

Next, we were asked to choose 3 objects to draw, each 5, with every one describing different emotions. So the objects I chose are pencil, candle and cups.

I thought very hard on the things that represent the emotions but I feel it is a very good exercise to help us think deeper and further.

Lateral thinking

My blog post for this week will be 'lateral thinking.' The definition of lateral thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic.

For last week's lesson, we've been asked to connect 9 dots together in just 4 straight lines, without lifting our pencils up, as shown in the picture below.

No matter how many times I tried, I could only join the dots altogether with 5 straight lines, not 4. My classmate got the answer in 10 minutes so she explained to the the class how she got it. She used the concept of 'stars' and the rule did not mention for us not to draw the straight lines within the 9 dots. What she did was to draw a straight line across, followed by a triangle which is drawn out of the 9 dots.

The next question our class was asked was 'If you were alone in a deserted house at night, and there were only an oil lamp, a candle and firewood, and you only have 1 match, which would you light first?'

http://energy.gov/sites/prod/files/styles/borealis_article_hero_respondlarge/public/fireplace_16149966.jpg?itok=xgvYNaEy

Most of the answers I heard was, they would light up the candle first because the candle can light up all the other things. For me, I'll light the oil lamp first because the flame would not be easily distinguish due to the oil and its coverage around the flame. If I light up the candle first, the flame may distinguish if the wind is too strong. Lighting up the oil lamp, i can also light up the other 2 things easily.

Lateral thinking allows you to think differently from your friend, completely from a different perspective, and its a skill one possesses.

Mindmapping

So here I am again, talking about mind mapping and brainstorming. Now the difference between mind mapping and brainstorming is that mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea while brainstorming is a group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas for the solution of a problem.

Mind mapping includes all the main points from the topic we're discussing. For example, my class did 'happy life.' What leads to a happy life?

There can be many factors which we included for our mind map- money, health, family. These are just general factors which can be branched out into even smaller and more detailed points. Take money as an example. With money, we can buy most of the things we want in life and be happy. Be it ferrari, bungalow, prada bags or Louis Vuitton shoes. When we get what we want, no doubt we will be happy.

http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/singapore-dollar.html

Of course there must also be other factors and not just wealth. Materialistic people who only needs money in their life will not be happy for their entire life, but only happy for a short period of time. Some things cannot be bought with money, that is, kinships, friendships and love.

Therefore, mind mapping gives us a clearer mind of what 'happy life' means and we can better visualise the whole concept of what leads to a happy life. Most of the time when I am not sure of what to write in an essay, or what to present, mind mapping would be the best choice to start with. Mind mapping provides the main points for you to better elaborate on the general factor, hence, it will be good to do mind mapping before the start of doing anything.

Brainstorming 2

Brainstorming is a sudden impulsion of idea a person gets when they have inspiration from something else. For example, I'm taking the course Fine Arts. I have to promote my art piece by brainstorming how a person would look at my art from a different perspective. For example, Vincent Van Gogh,  he painted 'Starry Starry Night' using the technique impressionism. He is able to capture the viewers' attention by painting out the beauty of a night filled with moon and stars. He is able to give viewers the visual movement of the wind amongst the night sky and the tree swaying side to side.

Fine Art students not only draw and paint, we have to think of our own ways to promote our art works so as to let viewers' better understand our ideology and the concept behind every stroke. Many people are able to draw well but what make ourselves stand out even more from the others?
The main job opportunity from Fine Arts might only be a few, maybe teachers, maybe artists. We will have to brainstorm the different procedures to succeed in selling our art pieces.

Brainstorming

Most people would say 'oh, brainstorming is a waste of time.' Some people would rather start with a proper work that they need to complete rather than brainstorming because it's an additional thing and it slows down the productivity of your work. But again, think twice. Brainstorming is an essential process to go through before the start of every work. It actually helps you think better and faster, and the most important thing, you will always be in the right track towards success.

http://d1u2s20mo6at4b.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/fit-brainstorming-session.jpg

Brainstorming will be something like a planning of what you want to do, or the thing you will have to do to make your work successful. Imagine going to war without any weapons, will you be in victory? It's the same things which goes to brainstorming and succeeding.

In brainstorming, we should always have the 5Ws1H- Who, What, When, Where, Why and How

http://blog.altstarr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/20150114.jpg

Sharing my thoughts of a class presentation which my class had done, I can say that I am not very well prepared. People usually memorise the main points of a presentation but do not know how to elaborate the points to make it clearer.

Breaking 101 ways down to only 20 special ways make it more distinct and easier for brainstorming because it allows one to have a deeper impression of it. In order to have a effective brainstorming, one must show interest and it will only then bring one far.
